Life has been so busy lately. What with working, and teaching, and grading, and all the things in between, I've hardly had time to keep up with everyone else's LJs, much less sit down and write in my own.

Let's see....news:

Japan )
exercise )
teaching )
car )
last week )

So, to sum up: At the moment, things are okay. Could be a lot better, particularly on the financial side. The car repair I'm estimating to cost me a minimum of $600. I'm budgeting as much again for the trip. And a new computer system would probably be a minimum of $500. That's a significant chunk of my savings right there, especially all at once. Ouch! But I suppose it could be a lot worse.

I'm still keeping up with it, on an almost-daily schedule [1]. I've experimented with adding and subtracting exercises. Here's what I'm doing right now:

15 lunges, each leg [2]
15 squats
20 knee pushups
30 situps
40 crunches
30 leg lifts, each leg
10 arm cruches* [3]
10 "reverse crunches"* [4]
5 forward presses*
5 shoulder lifts*

* with weights

My weight is holding pretty steady. I am still seeing definition and tone increasing in my muscles. I like that. *grin* What I don't like is what seems to be two or three small areas on my body that seem to be resevoirs of flab. Tiny flab to be sure, but flab. I'm trying to figure out what kind of exercises I can use to target those areas and tone them. One is just over my hips, one is on the back of my thighs, and one is on the sides of my torso, level with my breasts, slightly below my underarms.

[1] I take a break when I'm feeling tired from work or my muscles feel like I've started overdoing things. And when I go visit my parents, which is about every other weekend.
[2] I'm proud of the fact that I can now get my knee down to the carpet every time without losing my balance.
[3] Those who were paying attention will notice that my reps with the dumbbells have gone down, not up. That's because I just traded up from a 3 lb set of dumbbells to a 6 lb set, and I'm still getting used to them.
[4] My upper arms are parallel to the floor, I hold the dumbbells with the palms of my hands facing up, and I try to exercise my triceps by raising and lowering the dumbbells. I know there's a name for this, I've just forgotten it.

I mentioned earlier this year that I had started exercising. Well, I did wimp out for a while, when things got busy early in the summer, but about a month or so ago I resumed. I also bought myself a pair of 3 lb weights so I can do more arm exercises. My current routine seems to be working well. I can see definition starting in my stomach, and my posture has totally improved. My legs are starting to lose flab and get toned, and my arms have the beginnings of muscles for the first time in my life.

For those who are interested, here's what I'm doing, approximately once every other day:

general stretching
~30 situps
~30 crunches
~30 leg lifts, each side
~10 knee pushups
~10 arm crunches*
~10 shoulder presses*
~10 shoulder lifts*
~15 lunges, each side
~15 squats

*with weights

I think I'll be holding the situps, crunches, and leg lifts at 30 for the near future and work on getting my arm exercises up to snuff. But overall, I seem to have a fairly good whole-body workout going. Go me!
