Melusine, the fairest maid
in coldest snow was sadly laid
frozen sight and frozen sound
in ice eternal to be bound

no more the warmth of summer’s light
no more the darkness of the night
no more the touch of wind or hand
no more the sound of surf on strand

for aye to sit as locked in stone
seen no more and no more known
once a queen, beloved and praised
once a builder, of fortresses raised

once a sorceress of might
alas! her secret, hid from sight
alas! the scaly tail, the serpent’s tongue
alas! the tears of blood that wrung

alas! her sons, monstrous bred
alas! her man, on rumors fed
too curious to know the secret, aye
in her mysteries did pry

the warm water lashed into sea foam
the change that in the bath did come
the loathsome form that magic wrought
her vengeance for his crime she sought

but vengeance, as oft, itself consumed
until all her works of good it doomed
and now she sits upon her throne
seeing all her deeds undone

lamenting the force and might of time
prisoned forever in icy rime
Melusine, fairest, frozen maid
what a price she has paid!
