[exterior. day. a run-down part of town; slums and tenement housing everywhere. the OLD MAN and JUNIOR are walking down the street, trailed by SPIRIT.]
JUNIOR: ...and I want to thank you again for coming through for me.
OLD MAN: You think I'm blind? Stupid? Unfeeling? You're my son, of course I came through!
JUNIOR: [smiles] Well, thank you all the same. And for coming with me.
OLD MAN: Yeah, I sure don't get it. You wanna visit those two dopes who messed up the place to begin with?
JUNIOR: Not just them. Look around, dad. There's a whole bunch of people livin' here who don't deserve to. They made one bad decision and Mr. Morningstar took advantage of it.
OLD MAN: Yeah, so?
JUNIOR: It's not right. They never had no chance. Why punish them for that? I wanna help them. Bring them home, set things to rights.
OLD MAN: Well, if you say so, I'll go along with it. For now.
JUNIOR: Thanks, dad. [turns around] Hey, Spirit! Spirit! Here boy!
SPIRIT runs up to JUNIOR barking excitedly.
JUNIOR: Good boy. Why don't you fetch them for us, Spirit? Bring 'em home, boy.
SPIRIT barks excitedly and runs off. A series of excited barks echo from different slums and after a few moments, people begin to appear on both sides of the street. dirty, filthy, scrawny, in rags, hopeless. one of them (ADAM) steps forward.
ADAM: Is it true? Is it really you?
JUNIOR nods.
a second person, (EVE), steps forward.
EVE: Are we really allowed back? After what we did?
JUNIOR looks at the OLD MAN, who nods after a moment.
EVE: Hallelujah! [turning back to the others] Come on, folks! Let's us all go home together!
a chorus of happy exclamation greets the news and the crowd swarms after the OLD MAN and JUNIOR as they turn around and walk back home. at the very last of the group is SPIRIT, barking and chasing the stragglers as if they were sheep. suddenly, a slick figure in sleek businesswear stands in their way.
MORNINGSTAR: Halt, old man! You cannot take my tenants from me! The Deal forbids it!
OLD MAN: You broke that Deal! You and your boy Sammy! You cannot hold us to it anymore!
JUNIOR steps forward and waves a piece of paper in MORNINGSTAR's face.
JUNIOR: Court injunction, baby! Read it and weep.
MORNINGSTAR: [reads and fumes] Be assured I will consult my attorneys directly!
JUNIOR: You're welcome to try. And give Sammy my best, too.
MORNINGSTAR goes off in a rage while the crowd heads off in the opposite direction.
