What's interesting to me about the "where were you?" meme is which ones people remember. I know where I must have been when I heard about Reagan, and I have no idea where I was when I heard about Cobain, but I can tell you exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard about Princess Diana and the sequence of events by which I heard about 9/11. (Ditto, FWIW, Challenger.)

Diana & Cobain: Don't know, don't care. Reagan is fresh enough that I remember, though that won't last long: I was reading my Friends list on LJ, after which I jumped onto IRC to see if everybody else knew already as well.

I was seven Challenger happened, so I don't have that much memories of it. I do have a clear memory of watching that video for the first time, probably on the news or something. On the other hand that could easily be a false memory. Especially the bit where I seem to remember thinking "Oh crap, now we're never going to get a significant space presence". I'm pretty sure I didn't know words like significant back then.

I remember exactly how I found out about the events on 9/11, at least after the point where I went downstairs, turned on the TV and looked at the news on local teletext, after which I watched CNN for some hours straight. I don't quite remember where I first heard about "a plane" crashing into the WTC, which I first assumed meant some poor schmuck in a Cessna.
