Last night I woke up at about 3 am remembering what has to be one of the most disturbing dreams I've ever had.

There was this house. It was a ramshackle sorta place, not a dump or anything; it was in good condition, it's just that the rooms weren't in any sort of order. You'd have a bedroom right next to the living room, for example, and a second bedroom located halfway across the house next to the laundry room. And the fixtures, furniture, decorating schemes, etc. didn't all fit together either. It was like a jigsaw puzzle of a house. And I was its caretaker. And for some reason in my dream I thought that the house was alive, aware of its surroundings. It tolerated people living inside it and it even took good care of them, but only for so long as they took care of it. If it was disturbed or upset, it could become very angry.

(You may see where this is going.)

The first scene I saw was this group of kids in a living room or den sort of area. I got the impression that they were a sort of extended, sort of foster family sort of group. The oldest was 17 or so, the youngest maybe 7. There were about a dozen of them. They were staying in a part of the house for a little while until some temporary problem with their main residence was fixed. I dreamt myself telling them the house rules--pick up after yourself, be quiet, be respectful, etc., telling them that although they might not be inclined to listen to me, they would do well to follow them because if they didn't, the house itself would intervene.

After that, there was a gap and after that is when it got really disturbing. I'm guessing that this scene took place some time after the previous scene, because the kids were long gone. Instead, there was a small family, a husband, wife, and maybe three or four kids. One of which was this little girl. I think she might have been 6 or 7. Anyway, they decided to do some maintenance and painting in one room, and I think (although I'm not sure) that this was done without the house's approval. Because I think the house somehow caused what happened next. The guy was in the room painting the walls white and the little girl came in and was trying to get his attention, being bratty, that sort of thing. At first he was loving but firm as he told her he couldn't play with her just now, but as this went on and she got more and more bratty, he got more and more angry. Finally, he picked up his tray of paint and threw the paint at her. She had been screaming, and when the white paint splattered on her some of it got into her mouth. The rest got on her clothes.

Then for some reason my perspective switched to the outside of the house and I saw the long windows/doors that she had been standing against fly open towards me as a huge rush of white paint literally blew them open. Inside that massive amount of paint I could see the body of the little girl. She flew past me and into the open window of the old two seater car that was not too far away. Most of the paint landed in the car, too, and it formed a sort of lake inside. There was one horrific moment where I could see her little face come up to the surface of the paint "lake" that was inside the car. Her eyes were open and she was looking right at me, mutely begging for help, and her little mouth was open and I could see the paint in her mouth and down her throat as she tried to take a breath and yell for help. The paint was sticky, as if it was already drying around her. Then the guy came rushing out to the car, but it was too late. She had already suffocated.

While he was standing there in shock, the girl's mother came up and as she started to go into hysterics, he very calmly said to her, "There's been an accident." I remember his dead-calm, expressionless, emotionless voice.

It was at that point I came awake and I lay there in bed for a very long time, thinking about the dream. Why do I dream stuff like this? Why now? What does it mean, if anything? I sure don't know. My brain is a scary place, sometimes. *shiver*

Scary place, maybe, but a good place to find some ideas for short stories.

Goodness!

Your dreams are freaky-weird, but damn entertaining. You manage to remember far more of the "plot" than I'm ever able to.

"There's been an accident."

*shudder*

What an interesting dream. I have some like that sometimes, only mine are usually more "disturbing".
I like the idea of a house with a mind of its own; would make for a great movie.

Powerful dreams...

Have you found any message in the dream? Any meaning? Is the house your life and it's demands the things you've outgrown but do anyway?

Just a thought.
